As a photographer, one of the most common things I hear from couples is, “We’re so awkward in front of the camera!” or “We don’t know how to pose.” First of all, let me assure you: you’re not alone! So many people feel nervous about having their photos taken, especially when it’s for such an important occasion like an engagement or wedding. The good news is, I’m here to help you feel relaxed and look amazing in your photos, even if you’ve never been in front of a professional camera before.
Here are my top tips to help you feel comfortable and confident during your engagement session or wedding photoshoot:
1. Trust Your Photographer
One of the biggest keys to feeling comfortable is trusting your photographer. You’ve hired me for a reason, and I’m here to guide you through the process. You don’t need to worry about knowing how to pose or if you’re doing something “right.” I’ll provide direction, but more importantly, I’ll create an atmosphere where you can be yourself. If you feel comfortable enough to laugh, chat, and just enjoy the moment, the real magic happens.
2. Make It a Date!
One way to shake off the nerves is to think of your photoshoot as a fun date with your partner. Bring some of your favorite activities into the session, whether it’s having coffee at your go-to café, taking a walk in the park, or even doing something more adventurous like going to the beach or hiking together. When you focus on each other and the moment, instead of worrying about the camera, the candid moments will start to shine through.
3. Keep Moving
It can feel intimidating to “pose,” so I rarely ask couples to stand stiffly in front of the camera. Instead, I love to incorporate movement into my sessions. Whether it’s walking hand-in-hand, twirling in circles, or just playing around, movement helps you relax and creates authentic, joyful moments. These kinds of interactions bring out genuine smiles and laughter, which always look amazing on camera.
4. Don’t Be Afraid to Get a Little Silly
One of the best ways to break the ice is to get a little silly. Don’t be afraid to joke around, tickle each other, or just be goofy! Not only does this ease any tension you might be feeling, but it also results in some of the most fun, genuine photos. I love when couples embrace their personalities and just have fun with each other—it always leads to beautiful, real moments.
5. Focus on Each Other
Throughout the session, I’ll encourage you to focus on each other rather than the camera. Think of it as a time to reconnect and share some laughs. Talk about your favorite memories, whisper inside jokes, or reflect on the journey that brought you to this moment. This helps shift your attention away from the pressure of being photographed and back to the love you share, which is what I’m there to capture.
6. Breathe and Relax
It’s normal to feel a little nervous, but remember to take a deep breath and relax. I often remind my couples that this experience should be enjoyable, not stressful. By the time we’ve spent a few minutes together, you’ll start to feel more at ease, and the camera will feel less like a spotlight and more like a natural part of the day.
7. It’s Okay to Be Yourself
At the end of the day, the goal isn’t to transform you into someone you’re not. My job is to capture the unique connection you share as a couple. So, be yourself—quirks and all! The more genuine and natural you feel, the more your love will shine through in your photos.
Remember, this is about celebrating your love story. When you let go of the pressure to “perform” and just focus on the joy of being with your partner, the nerves tend to melt away. My aim is always to make you feel comfortable and to capture the moments that matter most—the real, unscripted, beautiful parts of your relationship.
I can’t wait to create memories with you! Let’s make your engagement or wedding session a fun, relaxed, and unforgettable experience.
