What to Expect When You Book Melissa Cook Weddings

One of the most common things I hear from couples after their wedding day is some version of: “I didn’t even notice you were there.” I take that as a compliment.

But before we get to wedding day, there’s a whole process that makes that possible. Here’s exactly what working together looks like, start to finish.

You reach out

Everything starts with the contact form on my website. I respond personally to every inquiry, usually within a day or two. From there, we’ll schedule a call or Zoom so we can actually talk. I want to know about your day, your venue, how you’re feeling about the whole thing. And you’ll get a sense of whether I’m someone you’d want following you around for eight hours.

No pressure, no sales pitch. Just a conversation.

You book

If we’re a good fit, I’ll send over a proposal, contract, and retainer invoice. Signing and paying the retainer locks in your date. I cap my calendar at 20 weddings a year, so once you’re booked, you’re really booked.

We shoot your engagement session

Most collections include an engagement session, and I’d encourage you not to skip it. Not because you need practice posing (you don’t), but because it helps. By the time wedding day comes, you’ve already met my second shooter, you know how I direct, and you’re not spending the first hour of portraits getting comfortable with a stranger. It makes a real difference.

Your engagement gallery is delivered within four weeks.

We do a planning call before your wedding

About two months out, we’ll go through your timeline together. I’ll ask about your family formal list, your first look plans, your venue layout, what moments matter most to you. We’ll also build in buffer time, because wedding days never run perfectly on schedule and I’d rather plan for that than pretend it won’t happen.

You’ll go into your wedding day knowing exactly what to expect from me.

Wedding day

I arrive with my second shooter and we get to work. My job is to stay close without hovering, to notice things before they happen, and to keep things moving without you feeling rushed. Your second shooter covers angles I can’t be in at the same time: details, crowd reactions, the ceremony from the back of the aisle while I’m at the front.

I’m not trying to manufacture anything. I’m just watching.

Sneak peek

Within 48 hours, I’ll send a small sneak peek gallery. It’s a way to give you something while the full edit is in progress, and honestly it’s one of my favorite parts of the process.

Your complete, edited gallery arrives within six to eight weeks. High-resolution, download-ready, with full printing rights. No watermarks, no low-res exports. Just your photos.

Albums and wall art (optional)

If you’ve added an album to your collection, we’ll start the design process after gallery delivery. Wall art and print options are available too if you want something on your walls that isn’t just a phone screensaver.

If you have questions about any part of this before reaching out, just send me a message. I’m pretty responsive.
